ACS Career Services Workshops
1 day course, Thursday, October 22, No Charge
Contact: Dr. Garretta Rollins, Office of Career Management and Development, ACS. Tel 202-872-6209, Fax 202-872-4529, Email: G_Rollins@acs.org

Career Workshops and Individual Résumé Reviews will be offered that will give members a unique insight into the job market.  The workshops are designed to help chemical professionals and students at all levels understand the current workplace and take advantage of employment opportunities.  The workshops and résumé reviews will be held on Thursday, October 22, in room 208-B/C.

Planning Your Job Search: 9:30 AM
This workshop addresses employment trends and professional values (self assessment). Then, the process of networking is explored: who is in your network, how to expand it. Strategies such as informational interviewing will be discussed.

Preparing a Resume: 11:00 AM
Your résumé is a personal introduction and leaves an impression. In this workshop you will learn which personal data format is right for your "marketing plan," and construct a winning résumé.

Effective Interviewing: 3:00 PM
Many job seekers think their work ends once an interview is secured. Think again! This workshop will examine the entire interview process, types of interviews, frequently asked questions, and how to evaluate an offer.

An ACS Career Consultant will be available to provide individual résumé reviews and career assistance. You must bring a copy of your résumé. Sign-up will be available at the meeting registration desk.

CHAS - Chemical Reactivity Hazards, Laboratory Scale, Recognition & Control (CANCELLED)
1 day course / $325.00
Wednesday, October 21, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM
Neal Langerman, Ph.D.

The Process Safety Alliance, in cooperation with U.S. OSHA is presenting a workshop titled CHEMICAL REACTIVITY HAZARDS: Laboratory Scale Recognition & Control. The objective of the workshop is to provide participants with the knowledge and skill to screen processes for potential hazards, recognize when reactive hazards are present, and implement appropriate controls to reduce the risk of an incident associated with the hazards. Workshop attendees will review case studies of actual incidents and do screening examples in order to understand the screening and recognition process. Group discussions of control methods will allow participants to share their experiences and to evaluate methods for controlling reactivity risks.

1 day course / $325.00
Friday, October 23, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM

The presenters bring a wide variety of experience to the table, but the real stars of the workshop are you - past attendees note the interactive approach focusing on their problems, from getting administrators involved in safety to dealing with regulatory concerns.

The course covers all of the content areas of the certification exam (presented on Sunday through NRCC), including a sample test in the same format as the real one. Whether you are a new Chemical Hygiene Officer or an "old" one, you will find something to put to real use in this fast-paced presentation. You can request an application packet for the Chemical Hygiene Officer certification examination by National Registry of Certified Chemists online at http://www.nrcc6.org.

Connecting Resources, Connecting Others: Supercomputing in the Global Age
1/2 day course / No Charge
Saturday, October 24, 8:30 -12:00 AM
Dr. Orlando Acevedo, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Auburn University, Auburn, AL 36849-5312
Phone: (334) 844-6549, E-mail: orlando.acevedo@auburn.edu

Please join the Computers in Chemistry (COMP) division and the Auburn local section for our hands-on “Instant Supercomputer!” workshop. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their laptops to build a one-day instant supercomputer using custom bootable CDs that allow them to work in parallel. The workshop presents a unique opportunity to do “public science” to solve a current research problem with a real time audience, rather than disseminating prior results. Short presentations will introduce the concept behind large-scale computational chemistry and ad hoc cluster building. All attendees are welcomed to keep the CD to build their own personal clusters.
